Cartan–Brauer–Hua theorem

Builds on Division ringSubringCenter of a ring

Statement

Let DD be a division ring, and let K⊆DK \subseteq D be a division subring of DD. Assume that xKx−1⊆Kx K x^{-1} \subseteq K for every nonzero x∈Dx \in D. Then K=DK = D or KK is contained in the center Z(D)={z∈D:zd=dz for all d∈D}Z(D) = \set{z \in D : zd = dz \text{ for all } d \in D}.

Remarks

A short proof works with two conjugates. Take a∈Ka \in K and b∈D∖Kb \in D \setminus K; then b≠0b \ne 0 and 1+b≠01 + b \ne 0, so k1=bab−1k_1 = b a b^{-1} and k2=(1+b)a(1+b)−1k_2 = (1+b) a (1+b)^{-1} lie in KK. Expanding (1+b)a=k2(1+b)(1+b)a = k_2(1+b) and using ba=k1bba = k_1 b gives (k1−k2)b=k2−a(k_1 - k_2) b = k_2 - a, so k1=k2k_1 = k_2 (otherwise b∈Kb \in K), hence a=k2=k1a = k_2 = k_1 and ab=baab = ba. So every element of KK commutes with D∖KD \setminus K; if K≠DK \ne D, every element of KK is a difference of two elements of D∖KD \setminus K, so it also commutes with KK, and K⊆Z(D)K \subseteq Z(D). Example: in the real quaternions ℍ\mathbb{H}, the subfield ℂ=ℝ+ℝi\C = \R + \R i is neither ℍ\mathbb{H} nor central, and indeed (1+j) i (1+j)−1=−k∉ℂ(1+j)\, i \,(1+j)^{-1} = -k \notin \C.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a division-ring analogue of the fact that a normal subgroup is a union of conjugacy classes. It is often applied with KK the subring generated by a conjugation-invariant set, such as the center together with some commutators. Its proof is elementary, in contrast with deeper results such as Wedderburn's little theorem, and it has a companion in Hua's identity, another elementary tool for division rings.
