Builds on Smooth manifoldVector fieldDifferential formExterior derivativeLie derivative

Statement

Let MM be a smooth manifold, let XX be a smooth vector field on MM and let ω\omega be a smooth differential form on MM. Let ℒX\mathcal{L}_X be the Lie derivative along XX, and let dd be the exterior derivative. Let ιX\iota_X be the interior product, given on a kk-form by (ιXω)(Y1,…,Yk−1)=ω(X,Y1,…,Yk−1)(\iota_X \omega)(Y_1, \dots, Y_{k-1}) = \omega(X, Y_1, \dots, Y_{k-1}). Then ℒXω=d(ιXω)+ιX(dω).\mathcal{L}_X \omega = d(\iota_X \omega) + \iota_X(d\omega).

Remarks

The idea of the proof: both sides are derivations of degree 00 of the algebra of forms, and both commute with dd. On a function ff both sides give XfX f, since ιXf=0\iota_X f = 0 and ιXdf=Xf\iota_X df = Xf. On an exact 11-form dfdf both sides give d(Xf)d(Xf). Locally every form is a sum of products f dg1∧⋯∧dgkf\, dg_1 \wedge \dots \wedge dg_k, so the two sides agree everywhere.

Example: on ℝ2\R^2, let X=−y ∂x+x ∂yX = -y\, \partial_x + x\, \partial_y, the infinitesimal rotation, and ω=dx∧dy\omega = dx \wedge dy. Then dω=0d\omega = 0 and ιXω=−y dy−x dx\iota_X \omega = -y\, dy - x\, dx, so d(ιXω)=0d(\iota_X \omega) = 0. Hence ℒXω=0\mathcal{L}_X \omega = 0: rotations preserve area.

The formula has two quick consequences. First, ℒX\mathcal{L}_X commutes with dd, since dℒX=dιXd=ℒXdd \mathcal{L}_X = d \iota_X d = \mathcal{L}_X d by d2=0d^2 = 0. Second, if ω\omega is closed, then ℒXω=d(ιXω)\mathcal{L}_X \omega = d(\iota_X \omega) is exact.

For a student

The second consequence above is the heart of the homotopy invariance of de Rham cohomology. Integrating ℒX\mathcal{L}_X along a flow shows that the pullbacks of a closed form by homotopic maps differ by an exact form. This gives the Poincaré lemma for star-shaped domains. In symplectic geometry the formula shows that a vector field XX preserves a symplectic form ω\omega exactly when ιXω\iota_X \omega is closed, which leads to Hamiltonian vector fields.
