Characteristic variety

Definition
Let be a linear differential operator of order on an open set , with principal symbol . The characteristic variety of is the set A nonzero vector is characteristic for at if . A hypersurface is noncharacteristic at a point if a normal vector of at satisfies .
Remarks
Example: for the heat operator on with variables , the order is and . So consists of the covectors with , that is, with . The lines have normal , so they are characteristic for the heat operator. Non-example: for the same operator the lines have normal , and there, so they are noncharacteristic. The set is conic: if lies in it, so does for every real . The operator is elliptic exactly when is empty.
