Partial differential equations Basic notions and classification Concept
Principal symbol
Summary
Take a linear differential operator of order , keep only its terms of order , and replace each derivative by a variable . The resulting polynomial in is the principal symbol. It captures the behaviour of the operator at high frequencies. Ellipticity, hyperbolicity and characteristic directions are all defined through the principal symbol. See the definition.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
