Definition

Let P=∑∣α∣≤maα(x) ∂αP = \sum_{\abs{\alpha} \le m} a_\alpha(x) \, \partial^\alpha be a linear differential operator of order mm on an open set Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n, with principal symbol σm(P)\sigma_m(P). The operator PP is elliptic at x∈Ωx \in \Omega if σm(P)(x,ξ)≠0\sigma_m(P)(x, \xi) \ne 0 for every ξ∈ℝn∖{0}\xi \in \R^n \setminus \set{0}. It is elliptic in Ω\Omega if it is elliptic at every point of Ω\Omega. The equation Pu=fP u = f is then an elliptic partial differential equation.

For a second-order operator ∑i,jaij(x)∂i∂j+∑ibi(x)∂i+c(x)\sum_{i,j} a_{ij}(x) \partial_i \partial_j + \sum_i b_i(x) \partial_i + c(x) with real symmetric (aij)(a_{ij}), this means that the matrix (aij(x))(a_{ij}(x)) is positive definite or negative definite at each xx. It is uniformly elliptic in Ω\Omega if there is a constant θ>0\theta > 0 with ∑i,j=1naij(x) ξiξj≥θ∣ξ∣2for all x∈Ω, ξ∈ℝn.\sum_{i,j=1}^{n} a_{ij}(x) \, \xi_i \xi_j \ge \theta \abs{\xi}^2 \quad \text{for all } x \in \Omega, \ \xi \in \R^n.

Remarks

Example: the Laplacian Δ=∑i∂i2\Delta = \sum_i \partial_i^2 has principal symbol ∣ξ∣2\abs{\xi}^2, which is nonzero for ξ≠0\xi \ne 0, so it is elliptic; it is uniformly elliptic with θ=1\theta = 1. Example: the Cauchy–Riemann operator ∂x+i∂y\partial_x + i \partial_y on ℝ2\R^2 has symbol ξ1+iξ2\xi_1 + i \xi_2, which vanishes only at ξ=0\xi = 0, so it is elliptic of order 11. Non-example: the wave operator ∂t2−∂x2\partial_t^2 - \partial_x^2 has symbol τ2−ξ2\tau^2 - \xi^2, which vanishes at (τ,ξ)=(1,1)(\tau, \xi) = (1, 1), so it is not elliptic. If all coefficients are real and n≥2n \ge 2, an elliptic operator has even order mm. Indeed σm(x,−ξ)=(−1)mσm(x,ξ)\sigma_m(x, -\xi) = (-1)^m \sigma_m(x, \xi), and a real continuous function that does not vanish on the connected unit sphere cannot change sign. For nonlinear second-order equations F(D2u,Du,u,x)=0F(D^2 u, D u, u, x) = 0, ellipticity is a monotonicity condition of FF in the matrix variable D2uD^2 u.
