Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold with cotangent bundle π ⁣:T∗M→M\pi \colon T^*M \to M, and let EE and FF be smooth vector bundles over MM. Let P ⁣:Γ(E)→Γ(F)P \colon \Gamma(E) \to \Gamma(F) be a differential operator of order at most mm. Let x∈Mx \in M, ξ∈Tx∗M\xi \in T^*_x M and e∈Exe \in E_x. Choose a smooth function ff on MM with f(x)=0f(x) = 0 and df(x)=ξdf(x) = \xi, and a section u∈Γ(E)u \in \Gamma(E) with u(x)=eu(x) = e. The principal symbol of order mm of PP is the bundle map σm(P) ⁣:π∗E→π∗F\sigma_m(P) \colon \pi^* E \to \pi^* F over T∗MT^*M given by σm(P)(x,ξ) e=1m! P(fmu)(x).\sigma_m(P)(x, \xi) \, e = \frac{1}{m!} \, P(f^m u)(x).

Remarks

The right side does not depend on the choices of ff and uu. Take a chart and trivialisations in which P=∑∣α∣≤mAα(x)∂αP = \sum_{\abs{\alpha} \le m} A_\alpha(x) \partial^\alpha. Then, with ξ=∑jξj dxj\xi = \sum_j \xi_j \, dx_j, σm(P)(x,ξ)=∑∣α∣=mAα(x) ξα.\sigma_m(P)(x, \xi) = \sum_{\abs{\alpha} = m} A_\alpha(x) \, \xi^\alpha. Indeed, at xx only the terms in which all mm derivatives fall on distinct factors ff survive, and they give m! ξαm! \, \xi^\alpha. So σm(P)\sigma_m(P) agrees with the principal symbol on open subsets of ℝn\R^n, and it is homogeneous of degree mm in ξ\xi. Many texts include a factor imi^m, defining the symbol through Dj=−i∂jD_j = -i \partial_j; this does not change where the symbol is invertible. The symbol is multiplicative: σm+l(PQ)=σm(P) σl(Q)\sigma_{m + l}(P Q) = \sigma_m(P) \, \sigma_l(Q).

Example: for the exterior derivative dd on kk-forms, d(fω)(x)=df(x)∧ω(x)+f(x) dω(x)=ξ∧ω(x)d(f \omega)(x) = df(x) \wedge \omega(x) + f(x) \, d\omega(x) = \xi \wedge \omega(x). So σ1(d)(x,ξ)ω=ξ∧ω\sigma_1(d)(x, \xi) \omega = \xi \wedge \omega. For the Laplace–Beltrami operator on functions of a Riemannian manifold, with the sign convention Δ=−div⁡grad⁡=−∑j,kgjk∂j∂k+(lower order)\Delta = -\operatorname{div} \operatorname{grad} = -\sum_{j,k} g^{jk} \partial_j \partial_k + (\text{lower order}), one gets σ2(Δ)(x,ξ)=−∣ξ∣g2\sigma_2(\Delta)(x, \xi) = -\abs{\xi}_g^2, or ∣ξ∣g2\abs{\xi}^2_g with the factor i2i^2.

Non-example: the full expression ∑∣α∣≤mAα(x)ξα\sum_{\abs{\alpha} \le m} A_\alpha(x) \xi^\alpha, with the lower-order terms kept, is not the principal symbol. It depends on the chart: for P=∂x2P = \partial_x^2 on ℝ\R and the new coordinate y=exy = e^x, one has P=y2∂y2+y∂yP = y^2 \partial_y^2 + y \partial_y, whose first-order term is not there in the old coordinate.
