Statement

Let m≥1m \ge 1 and let μ\mu be a positive Borel measure on ℝ\R with finite moments mk=∫ℝxk dμ(x)m_k = \int_\R x^k \, d\mu(x) for 0≤k≤2m−10 \le k \le 2m - 1. Assume that the Hankel matrix (mi+j)i,j=0m−1(m_{i+j})_{i,j=0}^{m-1} is positive definite. Let PmP_m be the monic polynomial of degree mm that is orthogonal to all polynomials of degree less than mm in L2(μ)L^2(\mu). Then PmP_m has mm simple real zeros ξ1<ξ2<⋯<ξm\xi_1 < \xi_2 < \cdots < \xi_m. Let ρ1,…,ρm>0\rho_1, \ldots, \rho_m > 0 be the Christoffel numbers, that is, the unique numbers with ∫ℝp dμ=∑j=1mρj p(ξj)\int_\R p \, d\mu = \sum_{j=1}^{m} \rho_j \, p(\xi_j) for every real polynomial pp of degree at most 2m−12m - 1. Let ν\nu be any positive Borel measure on ℝ\R with ∫ℝxk dν(x)=mk\int_\R x^k \, d\nu(x) = m_k for 0≤k≤2m−10 \le k \le 2m - 1. Then for each kk with 1≤k≤m1 \le k \le m, ∑j=1k−1ρj  ≤  ν((−∞,ξk))  ≤  ν((−∞,ξk])  ≤  ∑j=1kρj.\sum_{j=1}^{k-1} \rho_j \;\le\; \nu\bigl((-\infty, \xi_k)\bigr) \;\le\; \nu\bigl((-\infty, \xi_k]\bigr) \;\le\; \sum_{j=1}^{k} \rho_j.

Remarks

For the upper bound one builds, by Hermite interpolation, a polynomial qq of degree 2m−22m - 2 with q(ξj)=1q(\xi_j) = 1 for j≤kj \le k, q(ξj)=0q(\xi_j) = 0 for j>kj > k, and q′(ξj)=0q'(\xi_j) = 0 for j≠kj \ne k. One shows that q≥1q \ge 1 on (−∞,ξk](-\infty, \xi_k] and q≥0q \ge 0 on ℝ\R. Then ν((−∞,ξk])≤∫q dν=∫q dμ=∑jρjq(ξj)=∑j≤kρj\nu((-\infty, \xi_k]) \le \int q \, d\nu = \int q \, d\mu = \sum_j \rho_j q(\xi_j) = \sum_{j \le k} \rho_j, since the integrals of qq depend only on the moments; the lower bound follows by the reflection x↦−xx \mapsto -x. The measure ∑jρjδξj\sum_j \rho_j \delta_{\xi_j} of Gaussian quadrature has the given moments, and it attains every bound. In particular, the mass that any such ν\nu puts at the point ξk\xi_k is at most ρk\rho_k. For example, for m=1m = 1 with m0=1m_0 = 1 and m1=0m_1 = 0, one gets ξ1=0\xi_1 = 0 and ρ1=1\rho_1 = 1, and the inequalities say only 0≤ν((−∞,0))≤ν((−∞,0])≤10 \le \nu((-\infty, 0)) \le \nu((-\infty, 0]) \le 1. The positive definiteness of the Hankel matrix holds exactly when μ\mu is supported on at least mm points; it is needed for PmP_m and the numbers ρj\rho_j to exist.

For a student

The inequalities say that the distribution functions of all solutions of a truncated moment problem pass through a band around the staircase of the Gaussian quadrature measure. The bound on point masses, ν({ξk})≤ρk\nu(\set{\xi_k}) \le \rho_k, also follows from the extremal property of the Christoffel function.
