Classification of conics by the discriminant

Builds on Conic sectionEllipseParabolaHyperbolaCircle

Statement

Let Q={ (x,y)∈ℝ2:Ax2+Bxy+Cy2+Dx+Ey+F=0 }Q = \{\, (x, y) \in \mathbb{R}^2 : A x^2 + B x y + C y^2 + D x + E y + F = 0 \,\} be a non-degenerate conic section. Let Δ=B2−4AC\Delta = B^2 - 4AC be the discriminant. Then QQ is

  • an ellipse if and only if Δ<0\Delta < 0,
  • a parabola if and only if Δ=0\Delta = 0,
  • a hyperbola if and only if Δ>0\Delta > 0.

Moreover, QQ is a circle if and only if A=CA = C and B=0B = 0.

Remarks

The discriminant is −4-4 times the determinant of (AB/2B/2C)\begin{pmatrix} A & B/2 \\ B/2 & C \end{pmatrix}, the matrix of the quadratic part. A rotation or a translation of the coordinates does not change Δ\Delta or A+CA + C. So the type of a conic does not depend on the choice of Cartesian coordinates. A hyperbola with A+C=0A + C = 0 is rectangular: its asymptotes are perpendicular.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
