Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold. A closed geodesic is a nonconstant geodesic that is periodic: there is with for all . Two closed geodesics are geometrically distinct if their images are different sets.
Remarks
Equivalently, a closed geodesic is a smooth map that satisfies the geodesic equation and is not constant. A geodesic is closed if and only if and for some , by uniqueness of geodesics with given initial point and velocity. The closed geodesics are the critical points with positive energy of the energy functional on the free loop space of . Each closed geodesic of period gives infinitely many critical points, its iterates for , which is why counting geometrically distinct ones is hard.
Example: on the unit sphere , the great circle is a geodesic with period , so it is a closed geodesic.
Non-example: on the flat torus , the geodesic is not periodic. Indeed would need and , which is impossible for .
