Description
Let be a smooth manifold and the circle. The free loop space of is the set of all smooth loops in , with no condition on a base point. Since is compact, it is a manifold of smooth mappings, which is a Fréchet manifold. Its tangent space at a loop is the space of smooth vector fields along , that is, sections of .
Remarks
The circle acts on by rotating the parameter, , and the fixed points of this action are the constant loops, a copy of . Evaluation at is a map , , whose fibre over is the smooth based loop space . For , a loop has a degree in , and the connected components of correspond to the integers.
In topology one also uses the space of continuous loops in a space with the compact-open topology. For a manifold , the inclusion of smooth loops into continuous loops is a homotopy equivalence.
