Manifold of smooth mappings

Summary

Let MM be a compact manifold and NN a manifold. The set C∞(M,N)C^\infty(M, N) of all smooth maps is itself an infinite-dimensional manifold, modelled on Fréchet spaces of smooth sections. The charts come from the exponential map of a Riemannian metric on NN. A map near ff is written as x↦exp⁡f(x)(s(x))x \mapsto \exp_{f(x)}(s(x)) for a small vector field ss along ff. Loop spaces, diffeomorphism groups and spaces of embeddings are open subsets or submanifolds of such manifolds. Maps of class CkC^k, or of Sobolev class HsH^s with s>dim⁡M/2s > \dim M / 2, form Banach or Hilbert manifolds of maps, which are better suited to analysis.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
