Definition

Let MM be a compact smooth manifold without boundary and NN a smooth manifold, and let C∞(M,N)C^\infty(M, N) be the set of smooth maps M→NM \to N. Fix a Riemannian metric on NN, and let π ⁣:TN→N\pi \colon TN \to N be the tangent bundle. Fix an open neighbourhood VV of the zero section in TNTN on which the exponential map is defined. Choose VV so that (π,exp⁡) ⁣:V→N×N(\pi, \exp) \colon V \to N \times N is a diffeomorphism onto an open neighbourhood WW of the diagonal. For f∈C∞(M,N)f \in C^\infty(M, N), let Γ(f∗TN)\Gamma(f^* TN) be the space of smooth sections of the pullback bundle. These are the smooth maps s ⁣:M→TNs \colon M \to TN with s(x)∈Tf(x)Ns(x) \in T_{f(x)} N for all xx. With the topology of uniform convergence of all derivatives, Γ(f∗TN)\Gamma(f^* TN) is a Fréchet space. Let Uf={g∈C∞(M,N):(f(x),g(x))∈W for all x∈M}U_f = \set{g \in C^\infty(M, N) : (f(x), g(x)) \in W \text{ for all } x \in M} and define φf ⁣:Uf→Γ(f∗TN)\varphi_f \colon U_f \to \Gamma(f^* TN) by φf(g)(x)=(π,exp⁡)−1(f(x),g(x)).\varphi_f(g)(x) = (\pi, \exp)^{-1}(f(x), g(x)). The manifold of smooth mappings is C∞(M,N)C^\infty(M, N) with the smooth Fréchet manifold structure given by the atlas (Uf,φf)f∈C∞(M,N)(U_f, \varphi_f)_{f \in C^\infty(M, N)}.

Remarks

Each φf\varphi_f is a bijection onto an open subset of Γ(f∗TN)\Gamma(f^* TN), with inverse s↦exp⁡∘ss \mapsto \exp \circ s, and the chart changes are smooth. The resulting manifold structure does not depend on the choice of the metric, its topology is the C∞C^\infty topology, and the tangent space at ff is Γ(f∗TN)\Gamma(f^* TN).

Example: for M=N=S1=ℝ/2πℤM = N = S^1 = \R / 2\pi\Z with the flat metric, take VV to be the vectors of length less than π\pi. For the identity map ff, the chart sends gg near ff to the function ss with g(x)=x+s(x)g(x) = x + s(x) and ∣s(x)∣<π\abs{s(x)} < \pi. So near the identity, the diffeomorphisms of the circle correspond to small smooth functions on the circle.

Non-example: in the same setting, let ff be the constant map at a point yy, and gg the constant map at the antipodal point y+πy + \pi. Then (f(x),g(x))=(y,y+π)(f(x), g(x)) = (y, y + \pi) is a pair at distance π\pi, so it lies outside WW, so gg is not in the chart domain UfU_f; it lies in a different chart.

When dim⁡M≥1\dim M \ge 1 and dim⁡N≥1\dim N \ge 1, the model spaces are Fréchet spaces that are not normable, so this atlas is not an atlas of a Banach manifold.
