Definition

Let n≥0n \ge 0 and let MM be a Hausdorff, second-countable topological space. A complex chart on MM is a pair (U,φ)(U, \varphi) with U⊂MU \subset M open and φ\varphi a homeomorphism of UU onto an open subset of ℂn\C^n. A holomorphic atlas is a family of complex charts (Uα,φα)(U_\alpha, \varphi_\alpha) such that:

  1. the sets UαU_\alpha cover MM;
  2. for all α,β\alpha, \beta, the transition map φβ∘φα−1 ⁣:φα(Uα∩Uβ)→φβ(Uα∩Uβ)\varphi_\beta \circ \varphi_\alpha^{-1} \colon \varphi_\alpha(U_\alpha \cap U_\beta) \to \varphi_\beta(U_\alpha \cap U_\beta) is holomorphic.

Two holomorphic atlases are equivalent if their union is a holomorphic atlas. A complex manifold of dimension nn is such a space MM together with an equivalence class of holomorphic atlases, called a complex structure. A function f ⁣:V→ℂf \colon V \to \C on an open set V⊂MV \subset M is holomorphic if f∘φ−1f \circ \varphi^{-1} is holomorphic for every chart (U,φ)(U, \varphi) of the structure.

Remarks

Example: the Riemann sphere ℂ^=ℂ∪{∞}\hat\C = \C \cup \set{\infty} with the charts φ0(z)=z\varphi_0(z) = z on ℂ\C and φ∞(z)=1/z\varphi_\infty(z) = 1/z on ℂ^∖{0}\hat\C \setminus \set{0}, with φ∞(∞)=0\varphi_\infty(\infty) = 0. On the overlap, φ0(ℂ∖{0})=ℂ∖{0}\varphi_0(\C \setminus \set{0}) = \C \setminus \set{0}, and the transition map w↦1/ww \mapsto 1/w is holomorphic there; so ℂ^\hat\C is a complex manifold of dimension 11.

Non-example: on ℂ\C, the two charts φ1(z)=z\varphi_1(z) = z and φ2(z)=zˉ\varphi_2(z) = \bar z do not form a holomorphic atlas. Each is a homeomorphism onto ℂ\C, but the transition map w↦wˉw \mapsto \bar w is not holomorphic, so clause 2 fails.

Every complex manifold of dimension nn is a smooth manifold of dimension 2n2n, since holomorphic maps are smooth. It is canonically oriented, because the real Jacobian determinant of a holomorphic map is ∣det⁡Jℂ∣2≥0\abs{\det J_\C}^2 \ge 0, where JℂJ_\C is its complex Jacobian matrix. Further examples are open subsets of ℂn\C^n, complex projective space, complex tori and Hopf manifolds. A complex structure induces an almost complex structure; by the Newlander–Nirenberg theorem, the almost complex structures that arise this way are exactly the integrable ones.
