Number theory Corollary

Congruence is compatible with powers

Builds on Congruence modulo nCongruence is compatible with multiplication

Statement

Let nn be a positive integer, let aa and bb be integers, and let kk be a natural number. If a≡b(modn)a \equiv b \pmod n, then ak≡bk(modn)a^k \equiv b^k \pmod n.

Remarks

The proof is an induction on kk with compatibility with multiplication. The exponent cannot be reduced modulo nn in general. For example, 25=32≡2(mod3)2^5 = 32 \equiv 2 \pmod 3, but 25 mod 3=22≡1(mod3)2^{5 \bmod 3} = 2^2 \equiv 1 \pmod 3. Euler's theorem tells when one can reduce the exponent, and by which modulus.
