Difference and functional equations Functional equations: foundations Theorem
Continuous additive functions are linear
Statement
Let be an additive function, that is, for all . If is continuous, then
Remarks
Additivity gives for integers , and then for every rational , since . The rationals are dense in , so every real is a limit of rationals , and continuity gives . For example, if a continuous satisfies and , then , so . Continuity cannot be dropped. A basis of as a vector space over exists by the axiom of choice, and with it one builds additive functions that are not of the form . Weaker hypotheses suffice, such as continuity at a single point, monotonicity on an interval, or Lebesgue measurability. The same argument shows that a continuous additive map between real normed spaces is -linear.

For a student
This is the regular solution of Cauchy's functional equation, and many other classical functional equations reduce to it. For instance, a continuous with satisfies the hypothesis after taking logarithms, so with . In linear algebra terms, the theorem says that a continuous homomorphism of the group to itself is automatically -linear.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
