Numerical analysis Recurrences and evaluation of functions Theorem
CORDIC
Statement
Let , let for (see arctangent), and let . Let be a real number with . The CORDIC iteration in rotation mode starts from , , and, for , sets if and otherwise, and Then, in exact arithmetic,
- and ;
- ;
- hence and .
Remarks
Each step multiplies the vector by the matrix with rows and , , which is times the rotation by the angle . After steps the scale factors multiply to , which cancels , and the total angle is ; this is clause 1. For clause 2, concavity of on gives , hence by induction. With this, the bound passes from to , and at it gives . Clause 3 follows because and are -Lipschitz. Since , for the method covers all ; other angles are first reduced by symmetries. Multiplication by is a shift in binary, so each step needs only shifts, additions and a table lookup of .
Going deeper
For a student
The same iteration in vectoring mode drives to instead of , and then computes and, up to the known constant factor, the length . Replacing by and rotations by hyperbolic rotations gives the hyperbolic functions, the exponential and the logarithm; in that case some steps must be repeated to ensure convergence. The constant tends to about and is applied once at the start, not at each step.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
