Correspondence theorem for congruences

Builds on Algebraic structureCongruence relationQuotient algebraCongruence lattice

Statement

Let 𝐀\mathbf{A} be an algebra with universe AA and let θ\theta be a congruence on 𝐀\mathbf{A}. For a congruence ψ⊇θ\psi \supseteq \theta on 𝐀\mathbf{A}, put ψ/θ={(a/θ,b/θ):(a,b)∈ψ}.\psi/\theta = \set{(a/\theta, b/\theta) : (a, b) \in \psi}. Then ψ↦ψ/θ\psi \mapsto \psi/\theta is an isomorphism from the interval {ψ∈Con⁡𝐀:θ⊆ψ}\set{\psi \in \operatorname{Con} \mathbf{A} : \theta \subseteq \psi} of the congruence lattice onto Con⁡(𝐀/θ)\operatorname{Con}(\mathbf{A}/\theta).

Remarks

Proof idea. Let ν ⁣:𝐀→𝐀/θ\nu \colon \mathbf{A} \to \mathbf{A}/\theta be the natural map of the quotient algebra. For ψ⊇θ\psi \supseteq \theta, the relation ψ/θ\psi/\theta is a congruence, and its preimage under ν×ν\nu \times \nu is ψ\psi again, because ψ\psi contains θ\theta. Conversely, the preimage of any congruence on 𝐀/θ\mathbf{A}/\theta is a congruence on 𝐀\mathbf{A} containing θ\theta. These two maps are inverse to each other and preserve inclusion, so they are lattice isomorphisms.

Example: in the group ℤ\Z, take θ\theta to be congruence modulo 1212. The congruences above θ\theta are congruence modulo dd for the divisors dd of 1212, and they match the six subgroups of ℤ/12ℤ\Z/12\Z.

The hypothesis ψ⊇θ\psi \supseteq \theta is needed. For ψ\psi not containing θ\theta, the relation ψ/θ\psi/\theta can fail to be transitive, and different ψ\psi can give the same relation.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the general form of the correspondence theorems for groups, rings and modules, where congruences are replaced by normal subgroups, ideals and submodules. Together with the second isomorphism theorem (𝐀/θ)/(ψ/θ)≅𝐀/ψ(\mathbf{A}/\theta)/(\psi/\theta) \cong \mathbf{A}/\psi, it shows that a quotient of a quotient is again a quotient. It is used to prove that 𝐀/θ\mathbf{A}/\theta is simple exactly when θ\theta is a maximal proper congruence, and in the proof of Birkhoff's subdirect representation theorem.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
