Definition

Let U⊆ℂnU \subseteq \C^n be an open set, with coordinates z1,…,znz_1, \dots, z_n. For a smooth function f ⁣:U→ℂf \colon U \to \C, put ∂ˉf=∑k=1n∂f∂zˉk dzˉk,\bar\partial f = \sum_{k=1}^n \frac{\partial f}{\partial \bar z_k} \, d\bar z_k, where ∂/∂zˉk\partial / \partial \bar z_k is the Wirtinger derivative in the variable zkz_k. For a (p,q)(p, q)-form ω=∑I,JωIJ dzI∧dzˉJ\omega = \sum_{I, J} \omega_{IJ} \, dz_I \wedge d\bar z_J on UU, the ∂ˉ\bar\partial operator gives the (p,q+1)(p, q+1)-form ∂ˉω=∑I,J∂ˉωIJ∧dzI∧dzˉJ=∑I,J∑k=1n∂ωIJ∂zˉk dzˉk∧dzI∧dzˉJ.\bar\partial \omega = \sum_{I, J} \bar\partial \omega_{IJ} \wedge dz_I \wedge d\bar z_J = \sum_{I, J} \sum_{k=1}^n \frac{\partial \omega_{IJ}}{\partial \bar z_k} \, d\bar z_k \wedge dz_I \wedge d\bar z_J. It is extended to all complex forms by additivity over the types.

Remarks

The operator ∂\partial is defined in the same way with ∂/∂zk\partial / \partial z_k and dzkdz_k; it sends (p,q)(p, q)-forms to (p+1,q)(p+1, q)-forms. On forms on UU, the exterior derivative is d=∂+∂ˉd = \partial + \bar\partial, and ∂ˉ∘∂ˉ=0\bar\partial \circ \bar\partial = 0. It obeys the Leibniz rule ∂ˉ(α∧β)=∂ˉα∧β+(−1)kα∧∂ˉβ\bar\partial(\alpha \wedge \beta) = \bar\partial \alpha \wedge \beta + (-1)^{k} \alpha \wedge \bar\partial \beta for α\alpha of degree kk. Example: for f(z1,z2)=∣z1∣2+z2f(z_1, z_2) = \abs{z_1}^2 + z_2, ∂f/∂zˉ1=z1\partial f / \partial \bar z_1 = z_1 and ∂f/∂zˉ2=0\partial f / \partial \bar z_2 = 0, so ∂ˉf=z1 dzˉ1\bar\partial f = z_1 \, d\bar z_1. Non-example: ∂ˉ\bar\partial is not the exterior derivative, since ∂ˉz1=0\bar\partial z_1 = 0 while dz1=dz1≠0d z_1 = dz_1 \ne 0; the (1,0)(1, 0) part of dd is dropped. A C1C^1 function ff satisfies ∂ˉf=0\bar\partial f = 0 on UU if and only if it is holomorphic on UU. Because holomorphic changes of coordinates preserve types, ∂ˉ\bar\partial is well defined on complex manifolds.
