De la Vallée Poussin lower bound
Statement
Let , let be continuous, let , and let be a real polynomial function of degree at most . Let be points at which the values are nonzero and alternate in sign. Then the error of best approximation of by polynomials of degree at most in the supremum norm satisfies
Remarks
The idea of the proof: let be the minimum on the right and suppose some polynomial of degree at most has . At each , the difference has the sign of , because . So alternates in sign at points and has at least zeros, hence . But then , a contradiction.
Example: for on , and , the error takes the values at . So , while gives ; the true value is .
The number of points matters: with only alternation points no lower bound follows. For , and , the error takes the values at , but .
Going deeper
For a student
The bound is the easy half of the equioscillation theorem: when all the alternating values equal , it shows is best. In the Remez algorithm it certifies progress, since each iteration produces a polynomial and a set of alternation points, and the lower and upper bounds squeeze . The same argument works for any Haar subspace of dimension .
