Problem
Let be a finite connected graph with symmetric positive edge weights . Let be a nonempty set of boundary vertices, and let be the set of interior vertices. Let be a function. Find a function that is harmonic at every vertex of and satisfies on .
Remarks
The problem always has exactly one solution. Uniqueness follows from the maximum principle: the difference of two solutions is harmonic on and zero on . At an interior vertex where is largest, harmonicity forces the same value at all neighbours. Connectedness spreads this value to a vertex of , so , and in the same way . The conditions form a square system of linear equations in the unknowns , , so uniqueness gives existence. The solution has the probabilistic form , where is the random walk with started at and is its first hitting time of . Example: on the path with vertices , unit weights and , the solution is the linear interpolation . Connectedness matters: if a component of the graph does not meet , any constant can be added to on that component, and the solution is not unique.
