Definition

Let (G,c)(G, c) be a finite electrical network with vertex set VV, and let a,b∈Va, b \in V with a≠ba \ne b. Let v ⁣:V→ℝv \colon V \to \R be the unique function with v(a)=1v(a) = 1 and v(b)=0v(b) = 0 that is harmonic on V∖{a,b}V \setminus \set{a, b}. This is the solution of a discrete Dirichlet problem with boundary {a,b}\set{a, b}. Let I=∑yc(a,y)(1−v(y))I = \sum_{y} c(a, y)\big(1 - v(y)\big) be the net current that leaves aa. The effective resistance between aa and bb is Reff(a,b)=1/IR_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b) = 1/I. The number Ceff(a,b)=IC_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b) = I is the effective conductance.

Remarks

The current II is positive: 0≤v≤10 \le v \le 1 by the maximum principle, and v(y)<1v(y) < 1 for some neighbour yy of aa since GG is connected. Scaling vv shows that Reff(a,b)R_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b) is the voltage difference between aa and bb when a current of strength 11 enters at aa and leaves at bb. Example: for the path a−m−ba - m - b with unit conductances, v(m)=12v(m) = \tfrac12, so I=12I = \tfrac12 and Reff(a,b)=2R_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b) = 2, the sum of the two resistances in series. If an edge of conductance 11 is added between aa and bb, the current becomes 12+1\tfrac12 + 1, so Reff(a,b)=23R_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b) = \tfrac23, as for resistors in parallel. Non-example: if aa and bb lie in different components of a disconnected graph, no current can flow between them. Then the effective resistance is not a finite number, which is why connectedness is part of the definition of a network. With LL the weighted graph Laplacian and L+L^{+} its Moore–Penrose pseudoinverse, Reff(a,b)=(ea−eb)TL+(ea−eb)R_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b) = (e_a - e_b)^{T} L^{+} (e_a - e_b), where exe_x is the indicator vector of xx. The function (a,b)↦Reff(a,b)(a, b) \mapsto R_{\mathrm{eff}}(a, b), extended by 00 on the diagonal, is a metric on VV, the resistance distance.
