Distance in a graph

Builds on WalkReachability

Definition

Let GG be a graph and let u,vu, v be vertices of GG. If vv is reachable from uu, the distance d(u,v)d(u, v) is the smallest length of a walk from uu to vv. If vv is not reachable from uu, then d(u,v)=∞d(u, v) = \infty.

Remarks

A shortest walk is a path, so d(u,v)d(u, v) is also the smallest length of a path. Such a path is a geodesic. On a connected graph, dd is a metric: d(u,v)=0d(u, v) = 0 only for u=vu = v, it is symmetric, and it satisfies the triangle inequality.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
