Definition

Let XX be a complex manifold and let p,qโ‰ฅ0p, q \ge 0 be integers. Let ๐’œp,q(X)\mathcal{A}^{p,q}(X) be the complex vector space of smooth (p,q)-forms on XX, with ๐’œp,โˆ’1(X)=0\mathcal{A}^{p,-1}(X) = 0. Let โˆ‚ห‰โ€‰โฃ:๐’œp,q(X)โ†’๐’œp,q+1(X)\bar\partial \colon \mathcal{A}^{p,q}(X) \to \mathcal{A}^{p,q+1}(X) be the dbar operator, which satisfies โˆ‚ห‰โˆ˜โˆ‚ห‰=0\bar\partial \circ \bar\partial = 0. The Dolbeault cohomology group of bidegree (p,q)(p,q) is the quotient vector space Hโˆ‚ห‰p,q(X)=kerโก(โˆ‚ห‰โ€‰โฃ:๐’œp,q(X)โ†’๐’œp,q+1(X))imโก(โˆ‚ห‰โ€‰โฃ:๐’œp,qโˆ’1(X)โ†’๐’œp,q(X)).H^{p,q}_{\bar\partial}(X) = \frac{\ker\big(\bar\partial \colon \mathcal{A}^{p,q}(X) \to \mathcal{A}^{p,q+1}(X)\big)}{\im\big(\bar\partial \colon \mathcal{A}^{p,q-1}(X) \to \mathcal{A}^{p,q}(X)\big)}.

Remarks

The class of a โˆ‚ห‰\bar\partial-closed form ฮฑ\alpha is written [ฮฑ][\alpha]; two closed forms define the same class when they differ by โˆ‚ห‰ฮฒ\bar\partial \beta. Example: on X=โ„‚X = \C, every smooth (0,1)(0,1)-form gโ€‰dzห‰g\, d\bar z with compact support is โˆ‚ห‰\bar\partial of the function u(z)=12ฯ€iโˆซโ„‚g(w)wโˆ’zโ€‰dwโˆงdwห‰u(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_\C \frac{g(w)}{w - z}\, dw \wedge d\bar w, so it gives the zero class in Hโˆ‚ห‰0,1(โ„‚)H^{0,1}_{\bar\partial}(\C); in fact Hโˆ‚ห‰0,1(โ„‚)=0H^{0,1}_{\bar\partial}(\C) = 0. Example: Hโˆ‚ห‰p,0(X)H^{p,0}_{\bar\partial}(X) is the space of holomorphic pp-forms on XX, since there are no (p,โˆ’1)(p,-1)-forms to divide by. A nonzero class: let X=โ„‚/ฮ›X = \C/\Lambda with ฮ›=โ„ค+iโ„ค\Lambda = \Z + i\Z. The form dzห‰d\bar z is โˆ‚ห‰\bar\partial-closed on XX, but it is not โˆ‚ห‰u\bar\partial u for a smooth function uu on XX. Indeed, if it were, the lift u~\tilde u of uu to โ„‚\C would satisfy โˆ‚u~/โˆ‚zห‰=1\partial \tilde u / \partial \bar z = 1, so h=u~โˆ’zห‰h = \tilde u - \bar z would be entire. Then h(z+1)=h(z)โˆ’1h(z + 1) = h(z) - 1 and h(z+i)=h(z)+ih(z + i) = h(z) + i, so hโ€ฒh' is a doubly periodic entire function; it is bounded, hence a constant aa by Liouville's theorem. The two relations give a=โˆ’1a = -1 and a=1a = 1, a contradiction. So [dzห‰]โ‰ 0[d\bar z] \ne 0 in Hโˆ‚ห‰0,1(X)H^{0,1}_{\bar\partial}(X). The groups are also written Hp,q(X)H^{p,q}(X) when no confusion with other cohomologies arises.
