Definition
Let be a domain with boundary. Let be a smooth defining function of , as in the definition of the Levi form. Let be the unit disc. For a function of class near , let be its order of vanishing at . This is the smallest such that some partial derivative of of order is nonzero at , and if there is none. For , the type of at is where runs over the nonconstant holomorphic maps with . Here is the least order of vanishing of the components of . The domain is of finite type if for every .
Remarks
The number does not depend on the choice of , since two defining functions differ by a smooth positive factor. It is also called the D'Angelo type, or the -type. Example: at a strongly pseudoconvex point , so a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain is of finite type. For in , with an integer, the disc gives , so . Non-example: if contains a nonconstant holomorphic disc through , then , so . When , the type agrees with the type of Kohn, which is defined by iterated brackets of complex tangent vector fields.
