Group theory and generalizations Example
Doubling on the integers is not an isomorphism
Builds on IntegersGroup isomorphismInjective functionSurjective function
Example
Let be the integers with addition. Define by . Then , so is a homomorphism. If , then . Thus the kernel is , and is injective. The image of is the set of even integers. Thus is not in the image, and is not surjective. Thus is not an isomorphism.
Remarks
The image is isomorphic to . Thus is an isomorphism from onto , but not onto .
