Definition

Let Q⊂ℝ2Q \subset \R^2 be a compact connected set whose boundary ∂Q\partial Q is a finite union of smooth curves, called the table. A billiard trajectory in QQ is a path t↦q(t)t \mapsto q(t) in QQ with the following properties:

  1. Between two times at which q(t)∈∂Qq(t) \in \partial Q, the path is a straight segment run at unit speed.
  2. At a time when q(t)q(t) is a smooth point of ∂Q\partial Q, the velocity after the collision is the mirror image of the velocity before it. The component tangent to ∂Q\partial Q is kept and the normal component changes sign.

The billiard flow is the flow on the unit tangent vectors (q,v)(q, v), q∈Qq \in Q, ∣v∣=1\abs{v} = 1, that moves (q,v)(q, v) along its trajectory. The billiard map acts on the pairs (s,θ)(s, \theta). Here ss is the arc-length parameter of a point of ∂Q\partial Q, and θ∈(0,π)\theta \in (0, \pi) is the angle between an inward unit vector and the boundary. The map sends (s,θ)(s, \theta) to the next collision point and its outgoing angle. These two dynamical systems are called dynamical billiards.

Remarks

Example: let QQ be the unit disc. A chord leaving the circle at angle θ\theta to the tangent subtends the arc 2θ2\theta and meets the circle again at the same angle θ\theta. So the billiard map is (s,θ)↦(s+2θ mod 2π,θ)(s, \theta) \mapsto (s + 2\theta \bmod 2\pi, \theta), and the angle is a conserved quantity.

Non-example: a trajectory that hits a corner of ∂Q\partial Q, where the boundary has no tangent, is not continued by clause 2. Such trajectories form a set of measure zero and are left out.

The billiard flow preserves the Liouville measure dq dvdq \, dv. The billiard map preserves the invariant measure sin⁡θ ds dθ\sin \theta \, ds \, d\theta. The same definitions make sense for tables in ℝn\R^n and on Riemannian manifolds, such as the flat torus.
