Equilibrium measure
Builds on Compact setProbability measureEnergy of a measureLogarithmic capacity
Definition
Let be a compact set in . For a Borel probability measure on , let be its logarithmic energy, with values in . Let , the infimum over all Borel probability measures on . Assume that , that is, has positive logarithmic capacity. An equilibrium measure of is a Borel probability measure on with .
Remarks
Such a measure exists, because the probability measures on form a weak-star compact set and is lower semicontinuous for this topology. It is unique, because the energy is strictly convex on probability measures of finite energy. So one speaks of the equilibrium measure of .
Example: let be the unit circle and let be normalized arc length . For the mean value equals . So the potential of vanishes on , and , which agrees with capacity .
Non-example: the unit point mass is a probability measure on the unit circle, but .
In with the same definition is used with the Newtonian kernel in place of .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
