Eulerian poset

Builds on Graded posetBounded posetMöbius function of a poset

Definition

Let PP be a finite graded poset with rank function ρ\rho. Assume that PP is bounded, with a least element 0^\hat 0 and a greatest element 1^\hat 1. For x≤yx \le y in PP, let [x,y]={z∈P:x≤z≤y}[x, y] = \set{z \in P : x \le z \le y}. The poset PP is Eulerian when for all x<yx < y in PP, the interval [x,y][x, y] has as many elements of even rank as of odd rank.

Remarks

Equivalently, the Möbius function of PP is μ(x,y)=(−1)ρ(y)−ρ(x)\mu(x, y) = (-1)^{\rho(y) - \rho(x)} for all x≤yx \le y.

Example: the lattice of subsets of a finite set SS, with ρ(A)=∣A∣\rho(A) = \abs{A}. Check: for A⊊BA \subsetneq B with ∣B∖A∣=k≥1\abs{B \setminus A} = k \ge 1, the interval [A,B][A, B] has ∑j even(kj)=2k−1\sum_{j \text{ even}} \binom{k}{j} = 2^{k-1} elements of each parity of rank.

Non-example: the chain 0<1<20 < 1 < 2 with ρ(i)=i\rho(i) = i is graded and bounded, but the interval [0,2][0, 2] has two elements of even rank and one of odd rank.

Every interval of an Eulerian poset is again Eulerian. The face lattice of a convex polytope is Eulerian.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
