Fermat's little theorem in the form a^p = a

Builds on Fermat's little theorem

Statement

Let pp be a prime number and let aa be an integer. Then ap≡a(modp)a^p \equiv a \pmod p.

Remarks

If p∤ap \nmid a, multiply Fermat's little theorem ap−1≡1(modp)a^{p-1} \equiv 1 \pmod p by aa. If p∣ap \mid a, both sides are 00 modulo pp. Conversely, this form implies the form ap−1≡1a^{p-1} \equiv 1: cancel aa, which is allowed when p∤ap \nmid a. In the ring ℤ/pℤ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}, the form says that xp=xx^p = x for each element xx.
