Problem

Let N≥2N \ge 2 and α∈ℝ\alpha \in \R. Consider NN particles on a line with displacements q1,…,qNq_1, \ldots, q_N and momenta p1,…,pNp_1, \ldots, p_N, with fixed ends q0=qN+1=0q_0 = q_{N+1} = 0, and the Hamiltonian system with Hamiltonian H=∑k=1Npk22+∑k=0N(12(qk+1−qk)2+α3(qk+1−qk)3).H = \sum_{k=1}^{N} \frac{p_k^2}{2} + \sum_{k=0}^{N} \left( \frac{1}{2} (q_{k+1} - q_k)^2 + \frac{\alpha}{3} (q_{k+1} - q_k)^3 \right). For α=0\alpha = 0 the chain is a set of NN independent normal modes, each with a conserved energy. Start with all energy in the lowest normal mode and α≠0\alpha \ne 0 small. Explain the long-time behaviour of the energies of the normal modes. In particular, explain why the energy does not spread evenly over all modes. Instead it stays in a few low modes and returns almost completely to the initial mode after some time.

Remarks

Fermi, Pasta, Ulam and Tsingou expected the nonlinear term to share the energy evenly between the modes, as statistical mechanics predicts for an ergodic system. Their computer simulation on the MANIAC computer at Los Alamos showed the opposite: near recurrences to the initial state. In 1965 Zabusky and Kruskal studied a continuum limit of the chain, which is the Korteweg–De Vries equation, and discovered solitons in it. Other explanations use the closeness of the chain to an integrable system, namely the Toda lattice, and KAM-type and Nekhoroshev-type stability. It is now understood that for small energies the approach to equipartition, if any, happens only on very long time scales. A full quantitative description is still a subject of research.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
