Definition

Let ψn(x)=(2nn!π)−1/2Hn(x)e−x2/2\psi_n(x) = (2^n n! \sqrt{\pi})^{-1/2} H_n(x) e^{-x^2/2}, n≥0n \ge 0, be the normalized Hermite functions; they form an orthonormal basis of L2(ℝ)L^2(\R), the L2L^2 space. Let α∈ℝ\alpha \in \R. The fractional Fourier transform of angle α\alpha is the unitary operator ℱα\mathcal{F}_\alpha on L2(ℝ)L^2(\R) given by ℱα(∑n≥0cnψn)=∑n≥0e−inα cnψn\mathcal{F}_\alpha \Big( \sum_{n \ge 0} c_n \psi_n \Big) = \sum_{n \ge 0} e^{-i n \alpha}\, c_n \psi_n for every square-summable sequence (cn)(c_n).

Remarks

Let ℱf(ξ)=12π∫ℝf(x)e−ixξ dx\mathcal{F} f(\xi) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}} \int_\R f(x) e^{-i x \xi}\, dx be the unitary Fourier transform. Each ψn\psi_n satisfies ℱψn=(−i)nψn\mathcal{F} \psi_n = (-i)^n \psi_n, so ℱπ/2=ℱ\mathcal{F}_{\pi/2} = \mathcal{F}. Also ℱ0=id⁡\mathcal{F}_0 = \id, ℱπf(x)=f(−x)\mathcal{F}_\pi f(x) = f(-x), ℱαℱβ=ℱα+β\mathcal{F}_\alpha \mathcal{F}_\beta = \mathcal{F}_{\alpha + \beta}, and ℱα\mathcal{F}_\alpha depends only on α\alpha modulo 2π2\pi. For 0<α<π0 < \alpha < \pi it is an integral operator: for ff integrable and square-integrable, ℱαf(ξ)=1−icot⁡α2π∫ℝexp⁡(i2cot⁡α (x2+ξ2)−i xξsin⁡α)f(x) dx,\mathcal{F}_\alpha f(\xi) = \sqrt{\frac{1 - i \cot\alpha}{2\pi}} \int_\R \exp\Big( \frac{i}{2} \cot\alpha\, (x^2 + \xi^2) - \frac{i\, x \xi}{\sin\alpha} \Big) f(x)\, dx, with the principal branch of the square root; at α=π/2\alpha = \pi/2 this is the formula for ℱ\mathcal{F}. Some authors use the order a=2α/πa = 2\alpha/\pi instead of the angle, so that ℱ\mathcal{F} has order 11.

Example: f=ψ0=π−1/4e−x2/2f = \psi_0 = \pi^{-1/4} e^{-x^2/2}. Its only coefficient is c0=1c_0 = 1, and e−i⋅0⋅α=1e^{-i \cdot 0 \cdot \alpha} = 1, so ℱαψ0=ψ0\mathcal{F}_\alpha \psi_0 = \psi_0 for every α\alpha.

Non-example: the transform f↦∫ℝf(x)e−ixξ dxf \mapsto \int_\R f(x) e^{-i x \xi}\, dx without the factor 12π\frac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}} is not ℱπ/2\mathcal{F}_{\pi/2}. It sends ψn\psi_n to 2π (−i)nψn\sqrt{2\pi}\, (-i)^n \psi_n, so it multiplies the coefficient cnc_n by a number of modulus 2π≠1\sqrt{2\pi} \ne 1, and it is not unitary.
