Gabor transform

Builds on Short-time Fourier transformLp space

Definition

Let f∈L2(ℝ)f \in L^2(\R) (see Lp space). The Gabor transform of ff is the function Gf ⁣:ℝ2→ℂG f \colon \R^2 \to \C, Gf(τ,ω)=∫ℝf(t) e−π(t−τ)2 e−2πiωt dt,G f(\tau, \omega) = \int_{\R} f(t) \, e^{-\pi (t - \tau)^2} \, e^{-2\pi i \omega t} \, dt, for τ∈ℝ\tau \in \R (time) and ω∈ℝ\omega \in \R (frequency).

Remarks

It is the short-time Fourier transform VgfV_g f with the Gaussian window g(t)=e−πt2g(t) = e^{-\pi t^2}. Some authors allow a Gaussian e−απ(t−τ)2e^{-\alpha \pi (t - \tau)^2} of any width α>0\alpha > 0, or normalize the window to have L2L^2 norm 11.

Example: let f(t)=e−πt2f(t) = e^{-\pi t^2}. Then f(t)e−π(t−τ)2=e−πτ2/2e−2π(t−τ/2)2f(t) e^{-\pi (t - \tau)^2} = e^{-\pi \tau^2/2} e^{-2\pi (t - \tau/2)^2}, and the Fourier transform of e−2πs2e^{-2\pi s^2} at ω\omega is 2−1/2e−πω2/22^{-1/2} e^{-\pi \omega^2/2}. So Gf(τ,ω)=2−1/2e−πτ2/2e−πω2/2e−πiτωG f(\tau, \omega) = 2^{-1/2} e^{-\pi \tau^2/2} e^{-\pi \omega^2/2} e^{-\pi i \tau \omega}, and ∣Gf∣\abs{G f} is a Gaussian bump centred at the origin of the time–frequency plane.

Non-example: the short-time Fourier transform with the window 1[−1/2,1/2]1_{[-1/2, 1/2]} is not a Gabor transform, since its window is not Gaussian.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
