Functional analysis Banach algebras Theorem

Gelfand–Mazur theorem

Builds on Complex numbersDivision ring

Statement

Let AA be a complex Banach algebra with unit 1≠01 \ne 0. Suppose every nonzero element of AA is invertible, so that AA is a division ring. Then every a∈Aa \in A equals λ1\lambda 1 for a unique λ∈ℂ\lambda \in \C, and the map ℂ→A\C \to A, λ↦λ1\lambda \mapsto \lambda 1, is an isomorphism of algebras.

Remarks

Proof idea: the spectrum {λ∈ℂ:a−λ1 is not invertible}\set{\lambda \in \C : a - \lambda 1 \text{ is not invertible}} of each a∈Aa \in A is nonempty. Suppose it were empty, and let φ\varphi be a continuous linear functional on AA. Then λ↦φ((a−λ1)−1)\lambda \mapsto \varphi((a - \lambda 1)^{-1}) would be a bounded entire function that tends to 00, hence zero by Liouville's theorem. As this holds for every φ\varphi, the Hahn–Banach theorem would give (a−λ1)−1=0(a - \lambda 1)^{-1} = 0, a contradiction. So some a−λ1a - \lambda 1 is not invertible; in a division algebra this forces a−λ1=0a - \lambda 1 = 0. The complex scalars are needed. The quaternions ℍ\mathbb{H} with the Euclidean norm on ℝ4\R^4 form a real Banach algebra in which every nonzero element is invertible, but ℍ\mathbb{H} is not ℝ\R or ℂ\C. Consequence: a field that contains ℂ\C and has an absolute value extending the usual one on ℂ\C, complete for it, is ℂ\C itself.

For a student

The theorem is a basic step in the theory of commutative Banach algebras. If AA is a commutative unital complex Banach algebra and 𝔪\mathfrak{m} a maximal ideal, then 𝔪\mathfrak{m} is closed and A/𝔪A/\mathfrak{m} is a Banach division algebra, hence ℂ\C. This gives the characters A→ℂA \to \C that underlie the Gelfand transform. Some proofs of Ostrowski's theorem, that a field complete for an Archimedean absolute value is ℝ\R or ℂ\C, use the Gelfand–Mazur theorem.
