Statement
Let be an algebraically closed field and let be a smooth plane curve of degree in the projective plane. Then the genus of is
Remarks
One proof uses the adjunction formula: the canonical bundle of is , of degree , and this equals . Another uses the exact sequence . It gives , so the arithmetic genus of every plane curve of degree , smooth or not, is . Example: lines and conics have genus , smooth cubics have genus , and smooth quartics have genus . Smoothness is needed: the nodal cubic has degree but geometric genus . For an irreducible plane curve whose singular points are ordinary with multiplicities , the geometric genus is .
Going deeper
For a student
The formula shows that not every genus occurs for smooth plane curves: the values are . So a curve of genus is never a smooth plane curve, although it can be drawn in the plane with singular points. The formula is a special case of the adjunction formula, and its singular version is the basic tool to compute the genus of a plane curve from its equation.
