Goodstein's theorem

Builds on Peano axiomsOrdinal number

Statement

Let b≥2b \ge 2 be an integer. The hereditary base-bb notation of n≥1n \ge 1 writes nn as a sum be1c1+⋯+bercrb^{e_1} c_1 + \cdots + b^{e_r} c_r with e1>⋯>ere_1 > \cdots > e_r and 0<ci<b0 < c_i < b. Then it writes each exponent eie_i in hereditary base-bb notation again. Let Bb(n)B_b(n) be the number obtained by replacing every bb in this notation by b+1b + 1, with Bb(0)=0B_b(0) = 0. The Goodstein sequence of m∈ℕm \in \N is G1=mG_1 = m and Gk+1=Bk+1(Gk)−1G_{k+1} = B_{k+1}(G_k) - 1 while Gk>0G_k > 0.

  1. For every m∈ℕm \in \N the Goodstein sequence of mm reaches 00.
  2. Statement 1, written as a sentence of first-order arithmetic, is not provable in Peano arithmetic 𝖯𝖠\mathsf{PA}.

Remarks

Proof idea for 1: replace each base in the hereditary notation of GkG_k by the ordinal ω\omega. This gives an ordinal ok<ε0o_k < \varepsilon_0, and the change of base does not change it while subtracting 11 makes it strictly smaller. A strictly decreasing sequence of ordinals is finite, so the sequence reaches 00. Goodstein proved part 1 in 1944; Kirby and Paris proved part 2 in 1982, by showing that 𝖯𝖠\mathsf{PA} plus statement 1 proves the consistency of 𝖯𝖠\mathsf{PA}.

Example: for m=3m = 3, the sequence is 3=2+13 = 2 + 1, then 3+1−1=33 + 1 - 1 = 3, then in base 33, 3=313 = 3^1 becomes 4−1=34 - 1 = 3, then 22, 11, 00. For m=4m = 4 the sequence also reaches 00, but only after more than 10100,000,00010^{100{,}000{,}000} steps.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem shows how ordinals below ε0\varepsilon_0 measure the strength of 𝖯𝖠\mathsf{PA}: transfinite induction up to epsilon nought proves it, while 𝖯𝖠\mathsf{PA} does not. This ties it to Gentzen's consistency proof and to ordinal analysis. Like the Paris–Harrington theorem, it is a natural true statement independent of 𝖯𝖠\mathsf{PA}.
