Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set. For x,y∈Px, y \in P, say that yy covers xx when x<yx < y and no z∈Pz \in P satisfies x<z<yx < z < y; this is the covering relation. A rank function on PP is a map ρ ⁣:P→ℤ\rho \colon P \to \Z such that:

  1. if x<yx < y, then ρ(x)<ρ(y)\rho(x) < \rho(y);
  2. if yy covers xx, then ρ(y)=ρ(x)+1\rho(y) = \rho(x) + 1.

A graded poset is a partially ordered set together with a rank function.

Remarks

Example: the power set of a finite set, ordered by inclusion, is graded by ρ(A)=∣A∣\rho(A) = \abs{A}. A subset BB covers AA exactly when B=A∪{b}B = A \cup \set{b} with b∉Ab \notin A, so the rank goes up by one. Example: the positive divisors of an integer n≥1n \ge 1, ordered by divisibility, are graded by the number of prime factors counted with multiplicity. Non-example: the pentagon lattice with elements 0<a<b<10 < a < b < 1 and 0<c<10 < c < 1 has no rank function. The covers 0,a,b,10, a, b, 1 would give ρ(1)=ρ(0)+3\rho(1) = \rho(0) + 3, while the covers 0,c,10, c, 1 would give ρ(1)=ρ(0)+2\rho(1) = \rho(0) + 2. Some authors also require ρ\rho to take values in ℕ\N, or require all maximal chains to have the same length; the conventions should be checked in each source.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
