Grönwall bound

Builds on Grönwall's inequality

Definition

Let δ,K,ε\delta, K, \varepsilon be real numbers. The Grönwall bound with these parameters is the function Gδ,K,ε:ℝ→ℝG_{\delta, K, \varepsilon} : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} given by Gδ,K,ε(x)={δ eKx+εK(eKx−1)if K≠0,δ+εxif K=0.G_{\delta, K, \varepsilon}(x) = \begin{cases} \delta\, e^{K x} + \dfrac{\varepsilon}{K} \left( e^{K x} - 1 \right) & \text{if } K \neq 0, \\ \delta + \varepsilon x & \text{if } K = 0. \end{cases}

Remarks

The function v=Gδ,K,εv = G_{\delta, K, \varepsilon} is the unique solution of v′=Kv+εv' = K v + \varepsilon, v(0)=δv(0) = \delta. For ε=0\varepsilon = 0, it is δeKx\delta e^{K x}. A form of Grönwall's inequality uses it: let f:[a,b]→ℝnf : [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}^n be continuous and differentiable on (a,b)(a, b), with ∥f(a)∥≤δ\|f(a)\| \le \delta and ∥f′(x)∥≤K∥f(x)∥+ε\|f'(x)\| \le K \|f(x)\| + \varepsilon on (a,b)(a, b). Then ∥f(x)∥≤Gδ,K,ε(x−a)\|f(x)\| \le G_{\delta, K, \varepsilon}(x - a) on [a,b][a, b]. The estimate for approximate solutions is stated with this bound.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
