Definition
Let be the step function with on , on and elsewhere. For integers and , let The Haar system on is the family consisting of the constant function and all the functions .
Remarks
The function is supported on the dyadic interval , where it equals on the left half and on the right half. The Haar system is an orthonormal basis of (see Lp space). On the whole line, the functions with form an orthonormal basis of .
Example: and are orthogonal, since their supports and meet in one point. Also and are orthogonal: on the function is constant , and has integral there. And .
Non-example: the family of all without the constant function is orthonormal but not a basis of . Indeed, the constant is orthogonal to every , since each has integral .
