Hadamard finite part
Builds on Cauchy principal valueHölder continuity
Definition
Let and let be integrable, differentiable near , with Hölder continuous near . The Hadamard finite part integral of is Under these hypotheses the limit exists.
Remarks
The general rule is the same. Expand the integral over the region at distance more than from the singularity in powers of and . Then drop the terms that diverge as and keep the limit of the rest. For example, , so .
Example: on and . Then , so the finite part is .
Non-example: for and , the derivative condition fails at . The integral over equals , and subtracting leaves a divergent quantity, so this limit does not exist.
For as above, the finite part is the derivative of a principal value: where is the Cauchy principal value.
