Definition

Let š”»={zāˆˆā„‚:∣z∣<1}\mathbb{D} = \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} < 1} be the unit disc and let 0<p<āˆž0 < p < \infty. The Hardy space HpH^p is the set of holomorphic functions f ⁣:š”»ā†’ā„‚f \colon \mathbb{D} \to \C such that ∄f∄Hp=sup⁔0<r<1(12Ļ€āˆ«02Ļ€āˆ£f(reiĪø)∣p dĪø)1/p<āˆž.\norm{f}_{H^p} = \sup_{0 < r < 1} \left( \frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} \abs{f(r e^{i\theta})}^p \, d\theta \right)^{1/p} < \infty. The space HāˆžH^\infty is the set of bounded holomorphic functions on š”»\mathbb{D}, with ∄f∄Hāˆž=sup⁔zāˆˆš”»āˆ£f(z)∣\norm{f}_{H^\infty} = \sup_{z \in \mathbb{D}} \abs{f(z)}.

Remarks

The integral means increase with rr, because ∣f∣p\abs{f}^p is subharmonic, so the supremum is a limit as r→1r \to 1. For f(z)=āˆ‘n≄0anznf(z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} a_n z^n, a power series on š”»\mathbb{D}, Parseval's identity gives 12Ļ€āˆ«02Ļ€āˆ£f(reiĪø)∣2dĪø=āˆ‘āˆ£an∣2r2n\frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} \abs{f(re^{i\theta})}^2 d\theta = \sum \abs{a_n}^2 r^{2n}, so ∄f∄H22=āˆ‘n≄0∣an∣2\norm{f}_{H^2}^2 = \sum_{n \ge 0} \abs{a_n}^2. Example: f(z)=log⁔(1āˆ’z)=āˆ’āˆ‘n≄1zn/nf(z) = \log(1 - z) = -\sum_{n \ge 1} z^n/n has āˆ‘1/n2<āˆž\sum 1/n^2 < \infty, so f∈H2f \in H^2. Non-example: g(z)=1/(1āˆ’z)=āˆ‘n≄0zng(z) = 1/(1 - z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} z^n has all coefficients 11, so gāˆ‰H2g \notin H^2; in fact g∈Hpg \in H^p exactly for p<1p < 1. For 1≤pā‰¤āˆž1 \le p \le \infty, HpH^p is a Banach space; for 0<p<10 < p < 1 it is a complete metric space but not a normed space. There are also Hardy spaces of the upper half-plane and of domains in ā„‚n\C^n and ā„n\R^n.
