Hermitian kernel

Builds on Kernel of an integral equationComplex conjugate

Definition

Let a<ba < b. A Hermitian kernel on [a,b][a, b] is a kernel K ⁣:[a,b]×[a,b]→ℂK \colon [a, b] \times [a, b] \to \C such that K(x,s)=K(s,x)‾for all x,s∈[a,b],K(x, s) = \overline{K(s, x)} \quad \text{for all } x, s \in [a, b], where the bar is the complex conjugate.

Remarks

Example: K(x,s)=ei(x−s)K(x, s) = e^{i (x - s)}. The check: K(s,x)‾=ei(s−x)‾=e−i(s−x)=ei(x−s)=K(x,s)\overline{K(s, x)} = \overline{e^{i (s - x)}} = e^{-i (s - x)} = e^{i (x - s)} = K(x, s).

Non-example: K(x,s)=iK(x, s) = i, the constant kernel. Here K(s,x)‾=−i≠i\overline{K(s, x)} = -i \ne i.

On the diagonal a Hermitian kernel is real, since K(x,x)=K(x,x)‾K(x, x) = \overline{K(x, x)}. A real-valued kernel is Hermitian exactly when it is symmetric. For square-integrable kernels the condition is often required only for almost all (x,s)(x, s). Then the integral operator KK on L2(a,b)L^2(a, b) satisfies ⟨Ku,v⟩=⟨u,Kv⟩\ip{K u}{v} = \ip{u}{K v} for the inner product ⟨u,v⟩=∫abuvˉ dx\ip{u}{v} = \int_a^b u \bar v \, dx.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
