Hierarchical matrix

Builds on MatrixRank of a matrixTree

Definition

Let I={1,…,n}I = \set{1, \dots, n} be an index set. A cluster tree on II is a rooted tree whose nodes are nonempty subsets of II. Its root is II, and the children of each node partition that node. Let 𝒫\mathcal{P} be a partition of I×II \times I into blocks τ×σ\tau \times \sigma with τ\tau and σ\sigma nodes of the cluster tree. Let 𝒫=𝒫+∪𝒫−\mathcal{P} = \mathcal{P}^{+} \cup \mathcal{P}^{-} be a split into admissible blocks 𝒫+\mathcal{P}^{+} and the remaining blocks 𝒫−\mathcal{P}^{-}. Let k≥0k \ge 0 be an integer. Let MM be a real matrix with rows and columns indexed by II. It is a hierarchical matrix (ℋ\mathcal{H}-matrix) of local rank kk for 𝒫\mathcal{P} if each admissible block has small rank. That is, M∣τ×σM|_{\tau \times \sigma} has rank at most kk for every τ×σ∈𝒫+\tau \times \sigma \in \mathcal{P}^{+}.

Remarks

Each admissible block is stored as a product XYTX Y^T with XX of size ∣τ∣×k\abs{\tau} \times k and YY of size ∣σ∣×k\abs{\sigma} \times k. The blocks in 𝒫−\mathcal{P}^{-} are stored in full; the partition is built so that they are small. In applications each index ii carries a point xi∈ℝdx_i \in \R^d, and Ωτ\Omega_\tau is the set of points of a cluster τ\tau. The standard admissibility condition is min⁡(diam⁡Ωτ,diam⁡Ωσ)≤ηdist⁡(Ωτ,Ωσ)\min(\operatorname{diam} \Omega_\tau, \operatorname{diam} \Omega_\sigma) \le \eta \operatorname{dist}(\Omega_\tau, \Omega_\sigma) for a fixed η>0\eta > 0. With this condition, the matrices of asymptotically smooth kernels such as 1/∣x−y∣1 / \abs{x - y} are well approximated by ℋ\mathcal{H}-matrices of small rank. Example: let n=2mn = 2m, split II into halves τ1\tau_1 and τ2\tau_2, and call the two off-diagonal blocks admissible. A block diagonal matrix has zero off-diagonal blocks, of rank 00, so it is an ℋ\mathcal{H}-matrix of every local rank kk. Non-example: the exchange matrix, with ones on the antidiagonal, has off-diagonal blocks of rank mm. So it is not an ℋ\mathcal{H}-matrix of local rank k<mk < m for this partition.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
