Statement

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n be open, and let Lu=∑i,j=1naij(x) ∂i∂ju+∑i=1nbi(x) ∂iuL u = \sum_{i,j=1}^{n} a_{ij}(x) \, \partial_i \partial_j u + \sum_{i=1}^{n} b_i(x) \, \partial_i u have bounded coefficients on UU, with aij=ajia_{ij} = a_{ji} and ∑i,jaij(x)ξiξj≥θ∣ξ∣2\sum_{i,j} a_{ij}(x) \xi_i \xi_j \ge \theta \abs{\xi}^2 for some θ>0\theta > 0 and all x∈Ux \in U, ξ∈ℝn\xi \in \R^n. Let x0∈∂Ux_0 \in \partial U, and assume the interior ball condition at x0x_0: there is an open ball B⊆UB \subseteq U with x0∈∂Bx_0 \in \partial B. Let ν\nu be the outer unit normal of BB at x0x_0. Let uu be twice continuously differentiable on UU and continuous at x0x_0 on U∪{x0}U \cup \set{x_0}, with Lu≥0L u \ge 0 in UU and u(x)<u(x0)u(x) < u(x_0) for all x∈Ux \in U. If the one-sided derivative ∂u∂ν(x0)=lim⁡t→0+u(x0)−u(x0−tν)t\frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}(x_0) = \lim_{t \to 0^+} \frac{u(x_0) - u(x_0 - t \nu)}{t} exists, then ∂u∂ν(x0)>0.\frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}(x_0) > 0.

Remarks

Proof idea: let BB have centre yy and radius RR, and set v(x)=e−λ∣x−y∣2−e−λR2v(x) = e^{-\lambda \abs{x - y}^2} - e^{-\lambda R^2}. For λ\lambda large, Lv>0L v > 0 on the annulus A={R/2<∣x−y∣<R}A = \set{R/2 < \abs{x - y} < R}, and v=0v = 0 on the outer sphere. For small ε>0\varepsilon > 0, the function u−u(x0)+εvu - u(x_0) + \varepsilon v satisfies L(⋅)≥0L(\cdot) \ge 0 in AA and is at most 00 on ∂A\partial A, so it is at most 00 in AA by the weak maximum principle. At x0x_0 this gives ∂u∂ν(x0)≥−ε∂v∂ν(x0)=2ελRe−λR2>0\frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}(x_0) \ge -\varepsilon \frac{\partial v}{\partial \nu}(x_0) = 2 \varepsilon \lambda R e^{-\lambda R^2} > 0.

The interior ball condition is needed. Let UU be the part of the unit disc in the first quadrant, x0=0x_0 = 0 and u(x,y)=−xyu(x, y) = -xy. Then Δu=0\Delta u = 0 and u<0=u(x0)u < 0 = u(x_0) in UU, but ∇u(0)=0\nabla u(0) = 0, so every directional derivative at 00 vanishes. At the corner 00 there is no ball inside UU touching 00.

For a student

The Hopf lemma is the step that turns the weak maximum principle into the strong one. If an interior maximum occurred, one would find a small ball touching the set where the maximum is attained. The lemma would then give a nonzero gradient at a maximum point, which is impossible. It also gives uniqueness up to constants for the Neumann problem, and it is a basic tool in the moving plane method for proving symmetry of solutions. The smoothness of the boundary in the form of the interior ball condition holds, for example, for every bounded open set with C2C^2 boundary.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
