Horn hypergeometric series
Builds on Hypergeometric seriesFormal power series
Definition
Let be complex numbers with . Consider the formal power series . It is a Horn hypergeometric series if there are rational functions and of two variables such that for all :
- ;
- .
Write and with polynomials in lowest terms. The order of the series is the largest of the degrees of .
Remarks
The two conditions mean that the ratios of neighbouring coefficients are rational in , as for the Gauss hypergeometric series in one variable. Example: Appell's has . Then and , both rational, so is a Horn series of order . Non-example: gives , which is not a rational function of , so the first clause fails. Horn's list contains essentially distinct convergent series of order : complete ones, among them the four Appell series, and confluent ones.
