Hypergeometric function
Builds on Hypergeometric seriesAnalytic continuationHolomorphic function
Definition
Let with . The hypergeometric function is the unique holomorphic function on that agrees on the disc with the sum of the hypergeometric series
Remarks
Existence of this analytic continuation follows from Euler's integral representation when . In general it follows from the hypergeometric differential equation, whose only finite singular points are and . Uniqueness holds because is connected. This is the principal branch; continuation across the cut gives other branches of a multivalued function.
Example: on the whole cut plane, with the principal power, since both sides are holomorphic there and agree for .
Non-example: has no holomorphic extension to a neighbourhood of or to any annulus around : going once around changes by . So the cut, or a choice of branch, is needed.
Gauss's notation is common, and the normalized function is entire in .
