Problem
Let , and let be a convex body. A nonzero vector illuminates a boundary point of if the ray meets the interior of . The illumination number is the least number of vectors such that every boundary point of is illuminated by one of them. Show that , with equality only when is a parallelotope.
Remarks
Boltyanski proved that equals the least number of smaller homothetic copies , with , that cover . So the problem is equivalent to the Hadwiger covering conjecture, and it is open for . Example: for a disc, a vector illuminates the boundary point with outer normal exactly when . Three vectors at angles illuminate every boundary point, while two vectors never suffice, so . For the square, each corner needs its own direction, so .
