Index of a singular integral operator
Builds on Singular integral equationWinding numberHölder continuity
Definition
Let be a smooth simple closed curve in , oriented counterclockwise. Let and be Hölder continuous functions on with for all , and let be a Hölder continuous function on . Consider the singular integral operator of a singular integral equation of normal type The index of is the integer Here the bracket is the change of a continuous branch of the argument of after one run of around . In other words, is the winding number around of the closed curve .
Remarks
The condition says that and do not vanish, so the quotient is a nonvanishing continuous function on and its winding number is defined. Example: on the unit circle, and give and , so . The quotient is for , whose argument decreases by , so . Example: for and the quotient is the constant , so . Non-example: violates ; the quotient is everywhere, and no index is defined. The index does not depend on , and it is additive: the index of a product of two such operators is the sum of their indices.
