Definition

Let (X,μ)(X, \mu) and (Y,ν)(Y, \nu) be measure spaces whose measures are sigma-finite. Let K ⁣:X×Y→ℂK \colon X \times Y \to \C be a measurable function, the kernel. The integral operator with kernel KK is the linear map TT given by (Tf)(x)=∫YK(x,y) f(y) dν(y).(Tf)(x) = \int_Y K(x, y)\, f(y)\, d\nu(y). Its domain is the set of measurable functions f ⁣:Y→ℂf \colon Y \to \C for which the Lebesgue integral ∫Y∣K(x,y)f(y)∣ dν(y)\int_Y \abs{K(x, y) f(y)}\, d\nu(y) is finite for μ\mu-almost every x∈Xx \in X.

Remarks

Example: on X=Y=[0,1]X = Y = [0, 1] with Lebesgue measure, the kernel K(x,y)=1K(x, y) = 1 for y<xy < x and K(x,y)=0K(x, y) = 0 for y≥xy \ge x gives the Volterra operator (Vf)(x)=∫0xf(y) dy(Vf)(x) = \int_0^x f(y)\, dy. It is defined for every integrable ff, because ∫01∣K(x,y)f(y)∣ dy≤∫01∣f∣\int_0^1 \abs{K(x, y) f(y)}\, dy \le \int_0^1 \abs{f}. Non-example: the identity map of L2([0,1])L^2([0,1]) is linear but is not an integral operator with a function kernel. Such a kernel would give ∫AK(x,y) dy=1\int_A K(x, y)\, dy = 1 for almost every x∈Ax \in A and 00 for almost every x∉Ax \notin A, for every interval AA. This would force the measure K(x,y) dyK(x, y)\, dy to be a point mass at xx, which is impossible. If KK is in L2(X×Y)L^2(X \times Y), the operator maps the Lebesgue space L2(Y)L^2(Y) to L2(X)L^2(X) and is bounded with norm at most ∥K∥L2\norm{K}_{L^2}. Such operators are called Hilbert–Schmidt integral operators, and they are compact.
