Integrating factor for a non-exact equation
Builds on Exact equationTest for exactnessIntegrating factor
Summary
Let be an equation that is not exact on an open set . An integrating factor for it is a nowhere zero differentiable function on such that is exact. On a rectangle, with , and of class , the test for exactness makes this condition . The two equations have the same solutions, because has no zero.
Remarks
If is a function of only, then is an integrating factor. If is a function of only, then is an integrating factor. The integrating factor of a linear first-order equation is the first case: has , and .
