Iterated kernel
Definition
Let and let be a continuous kernel. The iterated kernels of are the functions , for , defined by and The function is the -th iterated kernel of .
Remarks
Example: on . Then , and by induction .
Non-example: the pointwise power is not the second iterated kernel ; iteration composes the integral operators, it does not multiply kernel values.
Each is continuous, and is the kernel of the -th power of the integral operator of . More generally for . If , then , by induction on . The same definition is used for square-integrable kernels, with equality almost everywhere. For a Volterra kernel, which vanishes for , the integral runs over .
